Our Story

187 North is more than a vineyard, it’s a piece of Texas history rooted in heritage, resilience, and the simple joy of gathering over a glass of wine.

Formerly known as Lost Maples Winery, our story begins with Tom and Glenda Slaughter, the original visionaries who cultivated the first commercial vineyard and winery in Bandera County. The vineyard itself lies within the historic Polvado Vineyards (originally Polvadeau), land that has been in Glenda’s family since 1812, when her great-grandfather immigrated from France.

For generations, these vines have carried forward a legacy. Our grapes — Black Spanish Lenoir — trace their roots back to Spain, brought into Mexico and Texas by missionaries to craft communion wine. Hardy and enduring, they reflect the spirit of the Hill Country itself.

In 2024, the Benavides family of Laredo, Texas became the proud new stewards of this historic vineyard. With deep appreciation for its roots, our vision is to breathe new life into 187 North. We are reimagining the tasting room experience, bringing in a food truck that serves gourmet bites, and introducing new offerings that complement our wines.

At the heart of it all is our estate-grown, old-vine port-style wine, the crown jewel of our vineyard and a true expression of Texas winemaking. To expand the experience, we’re also serving craft beer creating a space where wine lovers, beer enthusiasts, and foodies alike can come together.

187 North is both a continuation of a legacy and the start of something fresh — a gathering place where history, family, and hospitality meet.
